Tests confirm FMD in Kgatleng

  • Where: Oodi (Dikwididi) and Mochudi East extension areas, in veterinary zone 11.
  • What changed: the previously suspected outbreak is now laboratory-confirmed, according to the statement.
  • What is happening: emergency vaccination, checks for further cases, movement controls and measures to stop the virus spreading between farms.
  • For farmers: the statement says the restrictions announced on 4 September remain in place. It gives no reopening date.

In brief: the suspected Kgatleng outbreak has been confirmed. Follow the movement controls and report sick animals to veterinary services or the police.

What needs to happen before restrictions lift?What Botswana is working towards and what can reopen first

Restrictions can lift in stages. Moving animals within Botswana, regaining international disease-free status and selling beef to the EU each involve a different decision.

This guide explains the steps and gives context for the times involved. The sources on this page do not announce a date for wider reopening in Botswana.

Some local movements may be allowed first

The Department of Veterinary Services can set different rules for a particular zone, animal, destination or purpose. A notice can allow a specific journey while keeping other controls in place.

An example in the attached protocol: in zones 8, 9 and 10, animals may go straight to a registered slaughter facility within their own zone, with a permit. That exception does not allow ordinary movements between zones. Conditions · supplied PDF page 4 ↗

Tests have confirmed FMD

The statement dated 10 September confirms FMD in Oodi (Dikwididi) and Mochudi East, in Kgatleng. Vets are working to find how far it has spread and contain it. The earlier 2–3 week investigation estimate was not a reopening countdown.

Vaccination visits: 7–22 September

These are the published Kgatleng visit dates. The programme tells you when your crush is scheduled. Completion and follow-up disease checks are separate steps.

Before arranging a journey: ask which rule covers your animal, starting point, destination and purpose, and which permit or seal is needed.

The 10 September statement keeps the restrictions announced on 4 September in place. It gives no date for lifting them.

Show that the virus has stopped spreading

So where did “six months” come from? An April government report described a target to contain the virus within six months. That was an aim for the response, not an approved date for lifting restrictions. The September notice still sets movement controls.

The timing depends on the area, how the outbreak is controlled and what the tests show. An official decision for one area does not automatically reopen every other area.

EU beef exports need their own approval

The European Union (EU) checks the origin area, product and required certificates. Its area codes, such as BW-1 and BW-2, group veterinary zones differently from this map.

For an exporter, the useful milestone is approval for the exact shipment. A local movement permit or a WOAH status decision alone does not establish that. Veterinary services and the receiving country’s authority need to confirm the current import conditions.

DVS and NEOC

DVS means the Department of Veterinary Services — the government team to ask about animal movements, permits and disease control. NEOC means the National Emergency Operations Centre, listed in the government notice as a contact for the FMD response.

Which animals do these rules cover?

The notice uses “cloven-hoofed animals”: animals with a split hoof, such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, and some wildlife. Different animal types can have different exceptions. “Small stock” here means sheep and goats.

Containment area

An area with special controls intended to contain an outbreak. The rules inside and outside it may differ. It is not necessarily the whole veterinary zone. These boundaries are not shown on our map; veterinary services must confirm your farm’s position.

Permit, seal and transit

A permit is official written permission for a specified movement. An official seal is used to secure a load or vehicle as required by veterinary services. Transit means passing through a zone on the way somewhere else. Passing through can still require permission.

Fresh or processed products

The notice treats untreated animal products, including fresh meat, milk and hides, differently from products meeting its processing conditions. “Fresh” does not simply mean recently produced. Vacuum-packing alone does not count as processing. Check the exact product against the notice’s definitions on PDF page 9.

Slaughter, quarantine and a holding

Slaughter means killing an animal for meat; an abattoir is a slaughter facility. “Social slaughter” covers home use or events under the notice. Quarantine means keeping animals apart under veterinary controls for a specified period. A holding is the farm or premises where animals are kept.

Compartments, channelling and specially treated beef

An approved disease-free compartment is a recognised farm or group of facilities with specific controls, not simply an area with no reports on our map. Channelling means using a controlled, approved route through slaughter and processing. Commodity-based trade (CBT) uses specified treatment and handling conditions for the product. None of these labels gives general permission to move.

WOAH, EU and BMC

WOAH is the World Organisation for Animal Health, which assesses official disease status. EU is the European Union, which sets its own import rules. BMC is the Botswana Meat Commission.

About the 10 September copy

A reader supplied nine images on 12 September: the statement dated 10 September 2026 (reference DVS 1/12/2/4 V (149)) and eight pages of movement rules, reportedly posted by the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture on Facebook. We read those images and compiled them into a PDF without editing their contents. We could not independently retrieve the original Facebook post; this is a supplied copy, not a PDF downloaded from a government website.

A difference to check: the statement says the 4 September restrictions remain in place, but its supplied attachment explicitly includes direct slaughter from zone 12 to a designated abattoir in zone 13 (Hukuntsi). The older dashboard PDF we saved does not list that route. Our summaries show what the supplied attachment says and direct travellers to confirm the route with veterinary services. How we handle gaps and conflicting information

Movement summaries use the supplied attachment to the 10 September statement, which says the restrictions announced on 4 September remain in place. The older dashboard PDF is retained for comparison. We do not use restriction text embedded in older map layers. Some zones have subareas with different rules. Missing records do not establish freedom from disease, and a future-dated source record is marked for verification rather than treated as a new event.

What changed on this page?

12 September 2026 — Kgatleng confirmation: added the supplied statement dated 10 September and its eight-page attachment, replaced the pending-test explanation, and reviewed the zone summaries against that attachment. Added the listed zone 12–Hukuntsi slaughter route with a source-difference note, clarified home-use slaughter wording, and corrected the central-zone buying-point wording.
